A Watermelon Cultivation Seminar and Field Visit was successfully conducted on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the hall of the Shri Vitthalrao Joshi Charities Trust in Dervan. The program was jointly organized by the trust, the Agriculture Department, Maharashtra Government, and Non U Seeds Company. Farmers from nearby areas were invited, and the response was highly encouraging, with participants showing great enthusiasm to learn advanced and practical techniques in watermelon cultivation. The event began with a floral tribute and ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by an introductory speech delivered by Mr. Kotkar. After the inauguration, farmers and agricultural experts visited the demonstration farm where watermelon cultivation was carried out. The crop impressed all attendees, especially considering the high temperatures. Many farmers expressed curiosity about how such a healthy and productive crop was achieved under challenging climatic conditions. The crop demonstrated was the “Sharyu” variety, which matures in approximately 60 days and is developed by Non U Seeds Company. The cultivation practices included: Bed preparation with 9 feet spacing between rows
Use of large quantities of vermicompost
Installation of inline drip irrigation system
Application of 30 GSM plastic mulch
Proper covering of mulch with soil to prevent displacement
Planting at 45 cm spacing between plants The plantation was completed on February 28, followed by timely irrigation and regular crop management. The crop showed very low incidence of pests and diseases, and notably, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides were used. Instead, only organic inputs and bio-based products were applied. Farmers were given detailed guidance on these sustainable practices. Participants actively engaged in discussions and asked numerous questions, which were answered thoroughly by the experts present at the site. Due to increasing heat, the session later continued in the hall, where dignitaries were welcomed with flowers. Agricultural Officer Mr. Pisal provided detailed information about various government schemes. Mr. Nikhil Phutankar explained the field-level practices already demonstrated, while Mr. Dalvi from Non U Seeds Company shared insights about their watermelon as well as pumpkin varieties. An interactive question-and-answer session continued for nearly an hour, with farmers actively participating and experts addressing their queries effectively. Towards the conclusion, two watermelons from the field were cut open in front of the participants. Each fruit weighed approximately 3.5 kilograms. Farmers were also shown the proper cutting method before being offered samples. The taste and quality of the produce received excellent feedback. It was highlighted that the plot has the potential to produce approximately 1 ton of watermelons from a small area of land. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
