The Department of Psychiatry, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology at B.K.L. Walawalkar Rural Medical College (BKLWRMC), organized a two-day Suicide Prevention Day Awareness Programme on 10th and 11th September 2026 at the college campus in Sawarde, Chiplun. The programme was conducted to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and focused on creating awareness about early warning signs, empathetic intervention, psychological support, and the importance of timely professional care. The initiative brought together MBBS students, Psychology students, faculty members, patients, and their relatives. On 10th September, MBBS and Psychology students conducted an impactful street play at key areas including the OPD building and near the Casualty Department. The performance highlighted the warning signs of suicidal distress and encouraged compassionate responses and open conversations about mental health. On 11th September, Dr. Mrinmai Pevekar conducted an interactive educational session for faculty members on Psychological First Aid (PFA) and identifying signs of psychological distress. Through practical case scenarios, participants learned strategies for providing immediate support and guiding individuals towards appropriate professional help. The two-day programme promoted mental health awareness, empathy, early identification, and timely intervention, reinforcing BKLWRMC’s commitment to supporting mental well-being and suicide prevention.
