Shri Vithalrao Joshi Vidyapeeth, the emerging multidisciplinary higher education institution of Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charities Trust, was formally inaugurated at Dervan, Sawarde, Ratnagiri, marking a significant milestone in the development of higher education, research and innovation in the Konkan region. The Vidyapeeth was inaugurated by eminent nuclear scientist and Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar. Recent regional coverage described it as the first deemed-to-be university in the Konkan region. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, the Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India and former Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, was the Chief Guest of the inaugural programme. While addressing the gathering, Dr. Kakodkar expressed confidence that the Vidyapeeth would play an important role in India’s development and could emerge as a leading university with a global reputation. He stressed the need for universities to go beyond awarding degrees and focus on four fundamental dimensions of education, knowledge, skills, character-building and problem solving. He emphasised that research should focus on problems that genuinely need to be solved and should contribute to expanding knowledge and addressing societal needs, rather than being undertaken merely for publishing papers or academic promotions. He also stressed the importance of hands-on learning, interdisciplinary education, scientific thinking and preparing students to solve real-world problems while remaining rooted in Indian culture, values and ethos. The programme was graced by several distinguished academicians, scientists, public figures and education leaders as Guests of Honour. Hon. Dr. P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune, Deemed to be University, attended the ceremony. His presence brought valuable experience from one of Maharashtra’s established private higher education institutions. Prof. Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan, Chancellor, Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, Deemed to be University, was also present. Prof. Dr. Patwardhan appreciated the Dervan campus and its infrastructure and expressed willingness to explore academic collaboration and joint programmes with the Vidyapeeth in the future. He highlighted the Vidyapeeth’s distinctive foundation in Indian Knowledge Systems, modern science, research and social transformation. He also referred to the potential for collaboration with Deccan College in areas such as Bharat Vidya, Indian Knowledge Systems and integrated medicine, and said that the Vidyapeeth could become a distinctive institution with global recognition. Prof. Dr. Nitin R. Karmalkar, Chairman of the Maharashtra State NEP 2020 Steering Committee and former Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, attended the programme, bringing significant academic and policy-level experience in the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020. In his address, Dr. Karmalkar emphasised that education must go beyond degrees andfocus on creating responsible, well-rounded individuals through values, multidisciplinary learning and Indian Knowledge Systems. He observed that Dervan provides a living example of how education, healthcare, social service and community development can be integrated, and expressed confidence that the Vidyapeeth could serve as a model for other institutions implementing the spirit of NEP 2020 Shri Shashikant Sutar, former Minister for Agriculture, Government of Maharashtra, was another distinguished Guest of Honour at the occasion. In his address, Shri Sutar spoke about the simplicity, discipline, devotion, social commitment and service-oriented approach of Shri Sahajanand Saraswati Maharaj. He recalled how Maharaj’s life and teachings emphasised character-building, selfless service, devotion to the nation and preservation of cultural and spiritual values. He highlighted that the institutions and initiatives developed at Dervan reflect the enduring values of Shri Sahajanand Saraswati Maharaj and his vision of creating a society rooted in knowledge, संस्कार (values), service and national consciousness. The spiritual foundation laid by him, and subsequently carried forward by his disciples and the Walawalkar family, has contributed to the development of Dervan as a centre for education, healthcare, social service, culture and community development. The programme also featured Dr. Shripad Banavali, Consultant and former Director (Academics), Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, whose association added an important dimension of healthcare, medical education and academic leadership to the event. Dr. Banavali highlighted the institution’s long-standing foundation in rural healthcare, medical education and community development and expressed confidence that the Vidyapeeth, supported by its existing ecosystem and infrastructure, has the potential to meet international standards. Walawalkar, Managing Trustee, played a central role in the inaugural programme. He outlined the Trust’s longstanding journey in healthcare, education and social development and explained the vision behind establishing the Vidyapeeth. He emphasised the goal of providing students from Konkan with access to high-quality, globally oriented education while remaining connected to the region’s social and developmental needs. He also highlighted the importance of carrying forward the institution’s decades-old legacy of education, healthcare, social service and community transformation through the Vidyapeeth. The event was also attended by Dr. Shripad Banavali, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Suvarna Patil, Registrar of the Vidyapeeth, and other distinguished guests, faculty members, professionals and representatives of the Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charities Trust. A Research-Driven University for and from Rural India The Vidyapeeth has been envisioned as a research-driven, multidisciplinary, and socially responsible institution, integrating modern science and technology with the humanities, healthcare, entrepreneurship, sports, agriculture, and Indian Knowledge Systems. The vision also emphasises the integration of knowledge, skills, character and problem-solving, with students being prepared through experiential and hands-on learning. Its academic vision is aligned with the objectives of NEP 2020, with emphasis on multidisciplinary education, skill development, experiential learning, research and innovation. The institution is developing programmes in emerging and interdisciplinary areas such as Space Science, Biomedical Instrumentation with AI, Natural Farming, Psychology, Sports and Exercise Science, Entrepreneurship, Indian Knowledge Systems, Sanskrit and Darshan Shastra, among others. The dignitaries emphasised that such multidisciplinary integration can help bridge the gap between traditional knowledge, modern science and the changing requirements of society and industry. A distinctive feature of the Vidyapeeth is its connection with the wider ecosystem developed by Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charities Trust. The Trust’s educational and healthcare institutions, including the B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital and Rural Medical College, provide a foundation for interdisciplinary learning, clinical exposure, research and community engagement. The existing ecosystem at Dervan was described by the dignitaries as a strong foundation for building a university that combines education with real-world experience and social responsibility. The Vidyapeeth also reflects the Trust’s broader “Cillage” concept, creating a bridge between rural communities and advanced knowledge, technology, healthcare, education, entrepreneurship and skill development. The objective is to demonstrate that a university located in rural Konkan can provide opportunities comparable with those available in major urban centres while addressing the needs of local communities. Focus on Skills, Research and Self-Reliance Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Kakodkar highlighted the importance of creating institutions that produce not merely graduates but skilled, self-reliant and socially conscious individuals. He emphasised that research should be an integral part of university education and should contribute to solving real-world problems. Addressing the gathering, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar emphasised the need for universities to focus on real-world problems, promote interdisciplinary research, nurture scientific thinking and create an ecosystem that connects knowledge with innovation and national development. He stressed that educational institutions must prepare young people to work collaboratively across disciplines and develop solutions relevant to the needs of Indian society. He further observed that students should develop the confidence to identify problems, acquire the necessary expertise and skills, and return to contribute to solving challenges in India. Prof. Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan also highlighted the potential for academic collaboration with Deccan College. He praised the Dervan campus, describing its infrastructure as comparable to that of a high-quality educational complex. He also emphasised the importance of preserving and documenting India’s rich knowledge heritage and noted the significant potential of Indian Knowledge Systems for education, research and innovation. The inauguration thus brought together leading voices from science, higher education, NEP policy, healthcare, agriculture and public life, reflecting the multidisciplinary character that the Vidyapeeth seeks to establish.
