On the occasion of World Cancer Day, a Cancer Awareness and Health Check-Up Programme was organized on 4 February 2026 at the Urban Health Training Centre, Chiplun to spread awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. A total of 22 participants attended the programme.
The programme began with a welcome to the doctors, staff members and participants. Dr. G. D. Velhal, Head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of early detection of cancer for successful treatment.
Dr. Sampriti Samantha, Fellow from Tata Memorial Centre, explained in detail about breast cancer, oral cancer and cervical cancer, their symptoms, causes and modern treatment methods. She emphasized that timely diagnosis can help in curing cancer effectively.
Later, Dr. Keshav Shinde and Dr. Ashpak Shaikh guided the participants through a PowerPoint presentation explaining various types of cancer, preventive measures and lifestyle modifications necessary to reduce cancer risk.
During the programme, Swapnali Malap, Medical Social Worker, provided information about the healthcare services available at B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital, Dervan and the Urban Health Training Centre, Chiplun.
Doctors, nurses, interns, staff members and ANM students actively participated in the awareness initiative. The programme concluded with the distribution of tea and snacks to all participants.
