Introduction:
A guest lecture was organized for undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students with the objective of enhancing applied clinical understanding of case formulation and evidence-based therapeutic approaches. The session was delivered by Dr. Caitlin Butler, Senior Registrar in Liaison Psychiatry, who shared practical insights drawn from clinical settings.
Topic of the Session:
Case Formulation & Therapeutic Techniques
Case Formulation – 5P Model:
Presenting Problems: Identification of current psychological and behavioural concerns.
Predisposing Factors: Long-term vulnerabilities such as genetic and developmental factors.
Precipitating Factors: Recent stressors triggering the condition.
Perpetuating Factors: Factors maintaining the problem over time.
Protective Factors: Strengths and resources aiding recovery.
Therapeutic Techniques Discussed:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT): Cognitive restructuring, behavioural activation, thought records.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness.
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): Grief, role transitions, interpersonal disputes, interpersonal deficits.
Learning Outcomes:
Understanding the 5P model, linking formulation with therapy, exposure to CBT, DBT, and IPT.
Conclusion:
The session was highly informative and bridged theory with clinical practice, benefiting both UG and PG students.
