Prof. Shekhar Mande and Prof. Sharmila Mande visited B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital on 13th and 14th April 2025.
Prof. Shekhar C. Mande, a renowned biologist and former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has also served as the Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, and as the Director of the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune.
Prof. Sharmila Mande, who holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), was honored with the Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 2005 — India’s highest recognition in science, in the biological sciences category.
During their visit, both scientists interacted with faculty and researchers, and reviewed ongoing institutional and hospital activities. Prof. Shekhar Mande commended the institute’s efforts in developing quality healthcare and education facilities in a rural region, calling it an inspiring model of overcoming challenges in rural development. He also assured support for future initiatives.
Prof. Sharmila Mande appreciated the research environment and expressed interest in collaborating on microbiome research, an emerging field studying the bacteria within the human body.
