Outcome – Breast feeding provided vital health and nutritional benefits for children with positive life long Impact. 

On 6th August 2024, breastfeeding week was celebrated by the department of pediatrics of BKL Walalwalkar Rural Medical College and Hospital. A program was organized by our esteemed HOD, Dr. Suryakant Ingale and the faculty of pediatrics which included Dr. Anil Kurane, Dr. Madhavi Sahastrabudhr, Dr. Avinash Lukade, Dr. Shivaji Patil and our residents. It was done to promote awareness and benefits of breastfeeding to post natal and pre natal mothers along with their relatives. Around 30-35 women were a part of the event.

The event was started by an introduction to breastfeeding by Dr. Ingale which included detailed information to the mothers about breastfeeding guidelines, support from family regarding breastfeeding and benefits. This was followed by Dr. Madhavi discussing about all the various advantages of breast feeding to the mother as well as to the child. She also discussed various problems faced by different women and how to tackle those problems. Dr. Shivaji followed with his inputs on breastfeeding and disadvantages of other methods of feeding.

Not only the faculty but also interns and nursing staff took active participation in the promotion of breastfeeding. Nursing staff enacted a skit to demonstrate the ideal method and technique of breastfeeding using charts and posters to teach the mothers. A live demonstration was also given on how to hold the baby while breastfeeding and the method of breastfeeding. Benefits of colostrum, foremilk and hindmilk was told. This was followed by showing them a video about how to breastfed the child.  Active participation by the mothers in the audience was encouraged and any questions or doubts were answered. total 44 Participants.
